How Often Should You Be Washing Your Household Linens? How Often Should You Be Washing Your Household Linens?

Find out how often you should be washing your bath towels, bed sheets, pillows, and more.

In a similar way to clothing, household linens should be washed more frequently if they come into contact with food or skin. Whilst the majority of us wash our bed sheets every week or two, there are other household linens that you may be unclear about how often they need to be laundered. Common guidelines can help you determine how often you want to wash your household linens.

Bed sheets: Every 7-14 days

Bed linen is subject to a very specific type of wear and tear, so the frequency of washing it is to a large extent based on your individual preferences. If you enjoy climbing into fresh bed linen, and the smell of crisp new sheets, washing them every week or two is perfect. Some people, however, may enjoy a cosy, lived-in sort of bed where washing linen once a month would be better.
Obviously, in warmer months, for people who sleep without pyjamas or if someone is ill, washing bed linen regularly is essential.

Bath Towels: Every three or four uses

Whilst they're designed for heavy-duty use, bath towels often start to smell after a few uses, especially if you don't air them out properly after every shower. If you have a physically demanding job or work out regularly, you may even want to consider washing your bath towels after every two uses.
It should go without saying, but if a member of your household has a potentially infectious skin infection, never share towels and wash it after every use.

Tea towels: Every seven days

Tea towels will quickly pick up food stains, bacteria and odours. If you use your tea towel a lot, you will need to wash it every week. Decorative tea towels, however, can be washed less frequently at once per month. After large meals, or in the summer months, you may want to wash your tea towels more frequently to minimise risks of cross-contamination.

Hand towels: Two to three days

You may think that's a typo, but hand towels need to be washed extremely frequently. Kept in the high-traffic, germ-friendly environment of the bathroom, they can be a fertile breeding ground for bacteria. Besides, do you really want to dry your hands on someone else's toothpaste stains? Keeping a wide selection of hand towels will make it a lot easier than loading the washing machine every couple of days.

Pillows: Every six months

To prevent odours and stains becoming a permanent part of your pillows' make-up, wash them every six months. For both feather and synthetic pillows, always follow the washing instructions- you may find it easier taking them to a laundrette or dry cleaner. Before placing it back on your bed, ensure that it's 100% dry. To prolong the life of your pillows, you should use a pillow protector and never sleep on your pillow without a pillowcase.
